Vanilla planifolia

-Vanilla Orchid

Vanilla planifolia, commonly called vanilla, is a terrestrial or epiphytic orchid vine that is native to Mexico. In its native habitat, it may grow to as much as 50-75' tall over time, but as an indoor plant it typically grows much shorter. Typical of other Vanilla varieties, the planifolia has thick rubbery foliage that grows along the central vine. Overall a very attractive orchid, even when not in bloom. Natural vanilla flavor comes from the cured seed pods of this orchid. This is a relatively fast-growing plant with the ability to grow more than 5 feet in its first year in the right conditions. This orchid does well in the average home environment in terms of temperature and humidity but will absolutely flourish in warm humid environments.

We do not recommend this variety for terrariums and vivariums because of how fast it typically grows. It can over take a small to medium one in under a year. With regular grooming however many people have been successful keeping the V. planifolia in smaller enclosures.  Most people prefer to grow Vanilla in hanging planers or areas the plant will be allowed to climb.

Genus name comes from the Spanish name Vainilla meaning a small pod with reference to the shape of the fruit.

Favored by both hobbyists and professional growers, this orchid grows fast and can tolerate a larger temperature range than other varieties of orchids.
